12 Years Today

If I were really ambitious, I would go digging through the basement to find our wedding album in a box, but who has time for that on SEC Championship weekend and an overtime win by the Kentucky Wildcats?? This 2-year old photo will have to do.

Twelve years ago I married my super handsome and very funny best friend. Our wedding had its share of slip ups, but my favorite one has to be my dad and me getting stuck going down the handicap ramp of our venue--a historic home in downtown Douglasville, Georgia. My church was being renovated, and picking just any ole' church did not work for me. Rather than letting my dad walk ahead and meet me at the end of the skinny ramp, I charged ahead and waited on my dad. Yes, awkward.

I could tell you just about every person who attended our wedding and every detail of the day, but don't bother asking Jake. My rock of man got more than a little choked up during the ceremony. He was crying so hard our sweet Pastor had to ask him if he was going to be okay. Precious.

The reception was a sea of faces and college singing traditions. I loved it all. We survived the getaway and made it to our hotel before traveling the next day. Still in our wedding attire, I managed to slam my finger in the trunk. Neat. You can only imagine the horror on Jake's face.

Twelve years later, I'm so honored to stand by Jake. He's truly an amazing person with an enormous heart. He amazes me with his ability to give the best of himself to his family while pursuing a PhD and working full time in the always challenging world of the church. The students and community people he interacts with adore him, as they should. You cannot be around Jake and be in a bad mood. You cannot sit idly and tune out the challenge he issues to do more for others.

I feel confident we will not be the couple sitting in silence at Denny's when we're 72. I'm married to an adventure-seeking dreamer who will probably have us living in a 3rd world country loving on babies and sharing a meal with our village bffs all while shooting hoops in the street with our grandkids.

Much love, babe. Thank you for this amazing life together.
