About Vismay

I cannot believe we have been home with this sweet slice of heaven for just over a month now. Yes, he is really this cute , but no, his hair is not really purple. You can't have it all.

In honor of our one month home, I think I should share a little more about Vismay. I like lists, so let's go that route.
1. Language. He is learning English as fast as we can speak it to him. There really have not been any communication issues because he knew plenty of words in English when we met, and when we really want to make something clear to him, we just go with the basics. We do a lot of third person-speak, too. If it is good enough for pro-wrestlers, it is good enough for us.

2. TV is not his fave. This of course is totally fine with me, but sitting still is not his fave either. He is an incessant wandering pick-er-up-er. I'm not kidding. Never, ever stops. Selfishly I'd be okay if he liked TV just a little.

3. Animals? Not so much. We have a cat, and he is learning to enjoy him at a distance with the occasional brave attempt to touch it's tail. We witnessed a kitten falling out of a tree on Saturday (yes, I'm serious), and I think Vismay was the only one of us totally okay with walking away. And dogs--just forget it. No way. If one gets even remotely close, the child is climbing my head.

4. He is basically a vacuum. Whatever we put in front of him, he will eat. He will clean his plate. He will clean your plate. And much to my horror, he willingly obliged his brothers' encouragement to eat cat food. Unfortunately he complains of a stomach ache quite often. We're working on fixing that.

5. The child is a terrific sleeper. Mama is SO relieved! We're a month in, and I know things are subject to change without warning, but I am beyond grateful that by 8:30ish, all three fellas are down for the count. Vismay seems to love his bed, and I think bunking him with Dosen was a good move.

6. Vismay is fragile. His heart is fragile, and so is his body. He is so very different than Luke and Dosen, but his tiny little frame is so endearing, too. His cry is absolutely heart breaking because it usually comes with no sound. His huge brown eyes fill with tears, and he just mutters "okay" while you try to reassure him. It is almost impossible not to cry, too. Thankfully these moments are not very often.

Now for the funnier Vismay observations:
1. His breath is disgusting almost the entire day.
2. He smacks his food so loud at meals that I want to cry. I've tried several seating arrangements, background music, and the power of positive thinking. Currently considering Bose noise-canceling headphones.
3. All things transportation fascinate him, but airplanes are by far the best.
4. We get hugged and kissed 1,234,567 times a day. Sometimes strangers get the overflow like the unsuspecting man at Starbucks this morning. The man just cackled to look down and see the skinny Indian boy wrapped around his leg.
5. He loves to be in the car going anywhere.
6. Most engineers aren't singers, too. I don't think we'll be breaking that stereotype.
7. He's perfectly content to do his own thing, but you are more than welcome to join in.
8. Bath time might be his favorite time of day. He LOVES the days it is Dosen's turn to get out first.
9. His morning hugs are second to none--all 34lbs wrapped around you with his head buried in your shoulder (with his mouth facing away from you because that's when his breath is really kickin').
10. Do not tell him too soon what is coming up next or you will hear about it every single second until it happens.

So that's where we are with the Vis. Growing together as a family every day and enjoying this process of learning who he is. To say we are grateful for a smooth month is a gross understatement. Praying for a million more months of wonderful.

Ha ha ha. That post is wonderfully awesome. Our two adopted girls could match Visnay on the breath, for sure. What the HECK is that all about?!? Didn't see that one coming. Would have been nice if one of those pre-adoption classes woud have mentioned that. We'd have stocked up on Listerine in advance. :)

I have been wondering about you all! Your list sounds very similar to the way things were for us too. I am still attributing the touching, constantly moving, and T.V hating to orphanage life where constant hubbub is a way of life.

Good luck on the breath. . . at least it isn't coming from down south!

The lip smacking was actually a compliment to the cooks at Ashraya. I about died when the kids started in, but one of the caregivers explained the apparent cultural habit. Good luck on that one too.

The kids were practically sprayed with a hose and mug at Ashraya, so I can see why baths would be a highlight after the initial shock ;)

Keep it coming. . . much love to you all. Nisha just gasped when she saw Vismay's pictures and yelled, "HE INDIA!" Apparently, she still remembers.

I love it! Thanks for the update! After another email today about continuous passport delays, it's nice to have something to make me laugh. Thanks so much for sharing! Hopefully soon we'll be there too!

Glad to hear Vismay is doing well with the usual adjustments. He was such a snuggler--glad he's held on to that!

I know that bad breath that is terrible and chronic can be a sign of a parasite--so if he's got any other digestive-type or skin/hair symptoms, you may want to check that out!

Hi from Anju, too!

I love this post. So great to really know more about Vismay than just his cuteness and smile when I see him. Although that is great all by itself!
