Our first ever Fund Run

When a need seems greater than any solution you can offer alone, enlist friends to accomplish something together.

That's exactly what we're doing. On January 8&9, Jake and I are teaming up with 20+ runners from Cleveland, Tennessee to run the Walt Disney World half marathon/marathon with a goal to raise $26,000 for the One Child Campaign.

This "fund run" idea was born after a team from First Baptist, Cleveland visited Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in May 2010. While there, the hearts of the team members were broken for the overwhelming orphan crisis in Ethiopia. 5 million of the projected 147 million orphans worldwide live in Ethiopia, and while that statistic should be staggering, its just too big to shake us from numb.

Enter Caleb David and the One Child Campaign. Caleb traveled with Jake and the FBC team on the May trip to Addis. He had just made the trip earlier in 2010 when God used the lives of neglected children all over Ethiopia to spark a new vision for orphan care--the One Child Campaign. Caleb led Jake and the team to orphanages, drop-in centers, ministries for women rescued from sex slavery, ministries to teach young boys a worthwhile trade, and even to remote areas far from the attention of the capital city. The needs of Ethiopia are great, and while adoption surely plays a significant part, there is so much more to be done to bring hope, dignity, and LIFE to precious souls who will forever call that country home.

Every dollar raised in this Fund Run will go to the One Child Campaign. We're not skimming anything off for gas money to Orlando. We will not print t-shirts with your donation. We will not even high 5 Mickey Mouse with your generosity. Every penny will be invested into the well-established, well-accounted for efforts of One Child.

What can $26,000 do for the work of One Child?
  • Underwrite the staffing for a daily drop-center for single-orphaned children to keep them from surviving alone while their one parent or caregiver works for days or weeks far from home
  • Provide sponsorships for children to attend school to break the cycle of poverty in their families
  • Bring the most basic necessities to a remote village team living amongst the very poorest of Ethiopia
  • Share glimpses of dignity to thousands banished from the city forced to live in a literal trash dump with education and feeding centers
You and I can go to Ethiopia and be forever broken by unjust circumstances that many endure there, but God has given Caleb, his wife Becca, and their daughter, Sakari unique favor to partner in efforts for significant, measurable change in this country.

Simply put, we are seeking sponsors for our personal goal of $2,600 and for our Fund Run team members. Here's the part that would be read super fast if this were a car commercial:

1. Your gift is tax-deductible through the One Child Campaign.
2. You can give online by clicking on the “donate” button on the One Child website:
3. If you prefer to write a check, make it out to First Baptist Church with “marathon” in the memo. The church address is PO Box 2368, Cleveland, TN 37320-2368.

Thank you for any amount you can give, and if you are so inclined to share this opportunity with your circle of influence--work, church, blog, facebook, twitter, knitting club, book club, or fantasy football team--we would be so grateful.
